Portrait Special Interest Group

There's a video illustrating some of the activities of the Portrait group here.

We started the Portrait group in 2022 with fifteen very keen members.

The sessions have been organised as weekday or weekend meetings in addition to the clubs regular Monday evening get-togethers.

So far, we have had three meetings.

Two were in a studio setting demonstrating different types of lighting.

When the weather turned warmer, we arranged an outdoor shoot with a professional model at a location with lots of varied settings. This was on a June evening, to get the best light. Then, as the light faded, we started using LED lighting.

We’re all learning about posing, flash and constant lighting and having a laugh doing it!

Portrait photography is about capturing the essence, personality, identity and attitude of a person and making the best use of backgrounds, lighting and posing.

While this definition may sound simple, portrait photography can be one of the most challenging forms of photography to master. The goal is to capture a photo that appears both natural and yet prepared in a way that allows the subject’s personality to show through.

While it always helps to have equipment that is state of the art, it is really not needed.

Natural daylight and reflectors sometimes produce the best shots.

All members of WPS are very welcome to join this ever-growing group. Please contact either Tanja Nordmann or Denis Wesson for more information.

Here are a few shots taken by our members of other members who bravely sat as our models.

And some from the outdoor shoot.
